Katie Dawson - Your Green Voice on the council
Since her election in May 2006, Katie has brought a breath of fresh air to the Punch and Judy Politics of the Lib-Dem - Labour Council Chamber. Here are just some of the issues she has been fighting on
…On Co2 Emissions
The scheme to link parking charges to C02 emissions of the vehicle was a motion that Katie put forward – and was ignored by the Lib Dems and Labour until they realised just how popular it was! Following a 55% yes vote in a borough wide referendum, Katie’s proposal will now be implemented.
….On Safer Streets
Thanks to Katie’s research and lobbying. Monsell Rd. in Highbury is to be one of only two streets in the whole of London to be used as a trial for the SUSTRANS DIY Streets project. National funding and expertise will be made available to Monsell Rd. residents to design and implement their own traffic calming and environmental ideas, making their neighbourhood safer and more attractive.
…On Local Power
One of Katie’s first successes was to get the Council constitution changed so that more planning decisions are taken by Local Planning Committees, not anonymous Council bodies. One example of the impact this has had was at the Emirates Stadium, where developers were forced to install 200 cycle racks.
…On Sustainable Development
PVC windows, which only last about 10 years, cannot be recycled – in the UK we send 10 million of them to landfill every year . The council allows these to be used all over Islington, and Katie has fought to stop their use. When, early in 2007 proposals to have them installed in a historic Islington estate came up, Katie used her position to get them rejected.
