The state of Politics in Islington
The Emirates stadium, selling off council properties, losing precious green space, massive pay awards for select councillors, making it hard for local shops with heavy-handed parking controls - everywhere you look, the Lib Dem council has let Islington down. The council should look after local people, not property developers.
Labour has failed to hold the Lib Dems to account. They have been too close to former Islingtonian Tony Blair to campaign effectively against failed PFI projects like the Whittington Hospital, the ill-conceived City Academy at St Mary Magdalen or the sell-off of council housing. In contrast, the Green Party campaigns year-round on issues that matter to you.
But the dice are loaded against us…
Green Councillor Katie Dawson holds the balance of power between the Labour and Lib Dem juggernauts on Islington Council. But unlike them, Katie gets no office support at the Town Hall, because the council says the Greens “aren’t big enough“ even though we won 17% of the votes in Islington’s last council elections! Sounds bad?
At the same time, the Green Party is funded almost entirely by individual donations rather than being dependent on big business or trades unions like the larger parties. The Greens are an independent, truly democratic party, where members make the decisions. Sounds good?
If you said yes to both of these, then why not become a local member of the Green Party in Islington?
