Greens build momentum in 2009 Euros

Following our success in the 2008 GLA’s (below) the results for the GP in Islington showed a clear swing towards us.  We picked up 20%  of the vote across the borough,  finishing second behind Labour (on 29%).  Once again, as in the GLA’s we pushed the Lib Dems (19%) into third place and the Tories into fourth (14.5%).

Your votes in Islington helped re-elect Jean Lambert as London’s Green MEP. This was no mean feat, as the number of seats in the European Parliament allocated to London had been reduced from nine to eight for this election.  Across London, the Greens finished fourth on 10.9%, behind the Tories (27.4%) Labour (21.1%) and the LD’s (13.7%)

2008 GLA elections

More complicated, but the key test of Green support was the “List” vote - this was the proportional representation route to seats on the GLA. The electorate knew that this is where their support for us would count - and the votes piled in.

Across Islington we picked up over 16%, pushing the Lib Dems into third spot. In North Islington we registered a whopping 20%, comfortably beating the Tories (16%) and Lib Dems (13%). The strength of support for the Greens in North Islington was even more telling in the first-past-the-post vote, where Finsbury Park resident Aled Fisher once again put the Greens into second, ahead of the Tories and Lib Dems.

The support we got for the list vote helped re-elect Greens Darren Johnson and Jenny Jones to the London Assembly.  As important, it suggested that the good folk of Islington are pleased with the impact that our Highbury West councillor, Katie Dawson has made since she was elected - and that they want more of the same.
