A (short) history of IGP
Islington Green Party was formed in 1982 and has stood candidates in every council and parliamentary election since then. In 2004, Green votes in Islington helped re-elect Jean Lambert to the European Parliament as one of London’s MEPs. We have two Green members on the Greater London Assembly, and the North-East constituency (of which Islington is one-third) saw the highest Green vote in London. In the 2005 General Election, Jon Nott (standing in Islington North) and James Humphreys (Islington South) again raised the Green vote.
The real breakthrough, however, was Katie Dawson’s election as Islington’s first-ever Green councillor in the May 2006 local elections. Katie’s result gives the Greens a crucial position on the council, which is now split into 24 Lib Dems, 23 Labour and 1 Green.
Katie has hit the ground running, and is a popular, honest and hard working local councillor - read what she’s been up to on her own page. Her presence has boosted membership, raised our profile in Islington and put the other parties on the back foot - we are now the real opposition to the Lib Dem-Labour “Old Firm” in the Town Hall. One thing’s for sure - Islington politics will never be the same again…
